১৫ বছর ক্ষমতায় থাকার পরও সিলেটের আওয়ামী লীগের তৃণমূল নেতারা প্রান্তিক রয়ে গেছেন। দলের জন্য রাজপথে ঘাম ঝরালেও প্রভাবশালী নেতা ও তাদের ঘনিষ্ঠরা দলীয় কমিটিতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদ দখল করেছেন। এখন, দলের কঠিন সময়ে, এই বিশিষ্ট নেতাদের অনেকেই বিদেশে পালিয়ে গেছেন, যখন ‘ক্ষুদ্র’ নেতারা, যাদের সম্পদ বা দেশ ছাড়ার সুযোগ নেই, তারা গ্রেপ্তারের ভয়ে আত্মগোপন করছেন। প্রায় প্রতিদিনই আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীর হাতে গ্রেপ্তার হচ্ছে এসব নেতাকর্মী।

আওয়ামী লীগের দীর্ঘ ক্ষমতায় থাকাকালে মুষ্টিমেয় কিছু নেতা ও তাদের ঘনিষ্ঠ মহল সিলেটে দলের প্রভাব বিস্তার করে। ‘হাইব্রিড’ হিসাবে বিবেচিত এই নেতারা নিবেদিত তৃণমূল কর্মীদের পাশে রেখে ব্যক্তিগত সুবিধাগুলি কাটিয়েছেন। যারা রাস্তায় অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রম করেছেন তাদের অনেকেই উপেক্ষা করা হয়েছে এবং তাদের নিজের দলের মধ্যে বিরোধী দলের সদস্যদের মতো আচরণ করা হয়েছে।

আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের পতনের পর ৫ আগস্ট শেখ হাসিনা পালিয়ে যাওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সিলেটের এই বিশিষ্ট নেতাদের অনেকেই দেশ ছেড়েছেন। এমনকি বিএনপি নেতাদের সহায়তায় কেউ কেউ পালিয়েছে বলেও গুঞ্জন রয়েছে। যুক্তরাজ্য, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র এবং মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের বিভিন্ন অংশে যাওয়ার আগে বেশিরভাগই ভারতে পালিয়ে গিয়েছিল। তাদের অনেকের পরিবার যুক্তরাজ্য এবং মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বসতি স্থাপন করেছে, যেখানে তারা এখন নিরাপদে বসবাস করছে। কিছু নেতা, এখনও ভারতে, অন্য গন্তব্যে যেতে চাইছেন।

এদিকে, দেশ ছাড়তে না পেরে ‘ক্ষুদ্র নেতারা’ সিলেটসহ বাংলাদেশের বিভিন্ন স্থানে লুকিয়ে আছে। তবে আত্মগোপনেও তারা নিরাপদ নয়। দুই মাসের বেশি সময় লুকিয়ে থাকার পর, অনেকেই ফোনে পরিবার এবং বন্ধুদের সাথে যোগাযোগ করতে বাধ্য হয়েছে, যা আইন প্রয়োগকারী সংস্থাগুলিকে প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করে তাদের ট্র্যাক করতে এবং গ্রেপ্তার করার অনুমতি দিয়েছে। শুধু চলতি মাসের প্রথম ১১ দিনেই সিলেটে আওয়ামী লীগ ও এর সহযোগী সংগঠনের অন্তত ১০ নেতাকর্মীকে গ্রেপ্তার করেছে র‌্যাপিড অ্যাকশন ব্যাটালিয়ন (র‌্যাব)।

গ্রেফতারকৃতদের মধ্যে মহানগর ছাত্রলীগের ৪র্থ ওয়ার্ডের সভাপতি শহীদ শেখ; শ্রমিক লীগের ১৬ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের সভাপতি আজিজুল হাকিম রাজু; আবদুল্লাহ, বালুচরের ছাত্র লীগ ক্যাডার; মীর আবদুল্লাহ, কানাইঘাট উপজেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রচার সম্পাদক; নিজাম উদ্দিন, গোয়াইনঘাট উপজেলা আওয়ামী লীগের কৃষি বিষয়ক সম্পাদক; জেলা স্বেচ্ছাসেবক লীগের যুগ্ম সাধারণ সম্পাদক গোলাম কিবরিয়া মাসুক; এবং M.H. ইলিয়াসী দিনার, মহানগর যুবলীগের যুগ্ম সাধারণ সম্পাদক যুবনেতা রেদোয়ান আহমেদ বাপ্পী।

নাম প্রকাশ না করার শর্তে এক ওয়ার্ড পর্যায়ের আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা বলেন, দলটি ১৫ বছর ক্ষমতায় থাকলেও আমাদের মতো তৃণমূল নেতাকর্মীরা ভাগ্যের কোনো পরিবর্তন দেখেননি। প্রভাবশালী নেতা ও তাদের ঘনিষ্ঠরা ভাগ্য গড়েছেন যখন আমরা প্রতিটি কর্মসূচীর জন্য আমি চিকিৎসার খরচ বহন করতে পারিনি, এখন যারা ক্ষমতার মাধ্যমে অর্থ উপার্জন করেছে তারা দেশ ছেড়ে পালিয়েছে, আমরা ছোট নেতারা নিজেদের বাড়ি ছেড়ে পালিয়ে যেতে বাধ্য হচ্ছি।

Awami League’s Top leaders safe, small leaders in Danger in Sylhet

Despite being in power for 15 years, grassroots leaders in Sylhet’s Awami League remained marginalized. Although they sweated on the streets for the party, influential leaders and their close associates occupied key positions in party committees. Now, in the party’s difficult times, many of these prominent leaders have fled abroad, while the ‘small’ leaders, who lack the resources or opportunity to leave the country, are hiding in fear of arrest. Almost everyday these activists were arrested by the law enforcement force.

During the Awami League’s long tenure in power, a handful of leaders and their close circles dominated the party’s influence in Sylhet. These leaders, considered ‘hybrids,’ reaped personal benefits while sidelining the dedicated grassroots activists. Many who worked tirelessly on the streets were ignored and treated like members of an opposition party within their own party.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, with Sheikh Hasina fleeing, many of these prominent Sylhet leaders also left the country. There are even rumors that some fled with the assistance of BNP leaders. Most escaped to India initially, before heading to countries like the UK, USA, and various parts of the Middle East. Many of them have families settled in the UK and the USA, where they are now residing safely. Some leaders, still in India, are seeking to move to other destinations.

Meanwhile, the ‘small leaders’, unable to leave the country, are hiding in Sylhet and other parts of Bangladesh. However, even in hiding, they are not safe. After over two months in hiding, many have been forced to contact family and friends by phone, which has allowed law enforcement agencies to track and arrest them using technology. In the first 11 days of this month alone, at least 10 leaders and activists from the Awami League and its affiliate organizations in Sylhet have been arrested, many of them by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Among those arrested are Shahid Sheikh, president of the 4th ward of the Metropolitan Chhatra League; Azizul Hakim Raju, president of the 16th ward of the Labor League; Abdullah, a Student League cadre from Baluchar; Mir Abdullah, publicity secretary of the Kanaighat Upazila Awami League; Nizam Uddin, agricultural affairs secretary of the Gowainghat Upazila Awami League; Golam Kibria Masuk, joint general secretary of the district volunteer league; and M.H. Ilyasi Dinar, joint general secretary of the Metropolitan Jubo League, along with youth leader Redwan Ahmed Bappi.

One ward-level Awami League leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Even though the party was in power for 15 years, grassroots activists like us saw no change in our fortunes. The influential leaders and their close associates made fortunes while we stayed on the streets for every program. I couldn’t even afford medical treatment. Now, those who made money through power have fled the country, while we, the small leaders, are forced to flee our homes. and hide.”
